Today's Thought: PLEASE give me questions and situations to answer!!!
Okay everyone, I'm running out of ideas here. It's been a few weeks since my last post and that's mainly because I can't come up with more ideas unless I get people emailing me with their problems. Once I receive input from people who are looking for family history research tips and such, I can reply to them via my blog and therefor benefit many people around the world forever who have similar questions!!
So this post will be short and sweet: SEND ME EMAILS OR RESPOND TO THIS POST WITH YOUR GENEALOGY QUESTIONS!!!!
Even if it's not family history related, I'll be happy to answer your questions the best I could! Maybe I'll make this blog Family History And Computers And You!!! Hahaha, I don't know!! I just know that without anyone giving me a problem to solve, this blog can't go far.

Tip of the Day: Name Dropping!!!
When I was thinking of a helpful idea to place on my blog today, I came up with an interesting idea. I would start with a quick little summary of some names I'm working on and see what happens!! So if you're googling any of these names or know any of them, PLEASE contact me!!!! :) :)
William Bennette Kopping married Eva Merle Wendling Chamberlin on 1986, but he also married Mary Prosek in ???? and Loren F Martineau in 1976. His parents are William Henry Karl Kopping and Eva Grace Robarts, who was a twin. His siblings are Adaline Kopping (b. 1907) and Elmer Clifton Kopping (b. 1911). Adaline married Arne Andreasen about 1928 and I know nothing after that (as of the post). William Henry Kopping's parents were John Kopping and Hannah Mueller, probably from Germany since that's where William Karl Kopping was born. William Kopping can also be spelled William Copping, Will Coping, Bill Koping, and many other ways so be creative!! An interesting note is that William Henry Karl Kopping's original name on his immigration record is Wilhelm Kopping!! That should sound familiar from an earlier blog post :)
So, why did I go about and write a quick paragraph about the Kopping family that I have been researching? If you guessed "Because it's cool to name drop," then you are correct!!! If you have a website, blog, or any other searchable-from-google page on the internet, I HIGHLY recommend you add a post or whatever just name dropping like crazy, such as my simple example was!! Why, you ask? Because when you do a searcg on google (go ahead, try it!) for "Arne Andreasen" or "Eva Robarts" you will find a great little blog that some guy wrote somewhere in the world about..... FAMILY HISTORY!!!!! GOLD MINE!!!!!
Yeah, family name dropping is great!! Now from here onto forever, anyone who is researching the Kopping, Wendling, or Chamerlain line (among others) will be able to find a great source of information from my blog post today!! Isn't that cool?? Not only does it increase your web traffic some day, but it also benefits the whole world on family history research!! WOW!!!
I can't believe I just helped someone confirm their genealogical research in this post, can you? "But how did you confirm anything Sterl?" I'm happy you asked!! Going with what I said earlier in my blog post, someone down the road ten years, thirty years, or even 150 years from now will find this post on Google with a simple quoted name search for someone I mentioned above!! They will find a quick 4 or 5 generation pedigree chart in sentence form that I typed up with names, dates, and places which will confirm their hard-earned work (or disprove them by showing they traced the wrong line) and help them in their future research!! Maybe they didn't know that William Henry Karl Kopping came from the Island of Regan, Helle, Germany where he was born on October 12, 1879 and came to America on 1900 to the Seattle, Washington port!! Well, they do now for reading this post!!
Now that I taught you a nifty and fun little trick to help people with their family history research today, tomorrow, and forever, go out and do it!! When you do, be sure to include a link to my blog telling everyone that they should also do the same!! If one person does this because I said so and one of their friends does it because they said so and so on, assuming each person mentions only 5 family names, then the world would have SOOOOO MUCH genealogicaly-connected research to work with!! So be that one person and post it on your blog, Facebook, Myspace even, or website!! It's good for the economy of researchers! :)

Tip of the Day: Love Your Computer And It Will Love You!!!
What the HECK?!?! Okay Sterling, now I KNOW you've gone mad!!"
Now, now, everyone, please let me explain my motif!! Just as I mentioned, you must take good care of your computer and if you do, it will love you back and ensure you are well taken care of!!! If you still don't understand the purpose of basic computer loving and caring, let me ask you a question.
If you don't love your cat, will it claw up your nice furniture? I'll give you a hint, the answer begins with yes and ends with !!!!. Give up? YES!!!! You sure bet your cat will not love you as you neglect and refuse to take good care of it, so it will treat you like crap in return!!! So what importance does this have with doing your family history work?
Fact: Over 5 times a week, I receive complaints from patrons and fellow FHC workers about how their computers have "done something screwy," or how "it ate my family history work," or my personal favorite: "My computer died while I was working on my family history!!!" If you have had ANY of the following happen to you, something worse, or just want to learn a great tip from a tech professional that's easy and free, read on!!

Yeah, plain out and simple!! A program called Glary Utilities is the way to go for basic computer lovin' and scrubbin' (Copyright Sterling, 2010)!! Glary Utilities is a WONDERFUL program suite with a compilation of FREE and EFFECTIVE tools and other things that can clean up your computer better and FASTER than virtually any other program or compilation you'll ever find!! Other companies may give you free TRIALS or have a "LOW" price of $50 or more, but the team at Glarysoft have gone out of their way to bring to the computer world the best, and cheapest, option to all those other bogus companies!!

I'm glad you asked!! All you have to do is go to THIS SITE to download the program, Absolutely FREE!!! Once you download it, be sure to install the program carefully as sometimes it asks you to download the not-required Ask.com toolbar!!! I just hate to see people install extra programs and toolbars that they don't need, so PLEASE uncheck those boxes if it asks you!!
After installing Glary Utilities, you will want to open the program. After bringing up the beautiful metropolis-of-a-package, you may hear your computer sigh for the first time. Yes, it's true that your poor, battered computer is longing for the lovin' and scrubbin' that it needs just like a hard worker loves a nice, hot bath after a long day!!! The screen you are approached with is quite simple; it shows a few check boxes with some words and a modest "Scan for Issues" button. Well, I would think that even an ape would understand that, so click away!! The initial scan takes about 5 minutes if your computer is packed full of stuff, but in reality only about a minute or two. DO NOT FRET IF YOUR COMPUTER HAS 500+ PROBLEMS, THAT IS NORMAL!! After that, you'll see just how many errors can safely and effectively be removed from your computer that's begging for help. So, now to the next part of this cleanup!! We want to click the following "Repair Problems" button and let it do it's thing!! Wow, wasn't that FAST?!?!
Now, if you really want to get this sucker clean and speed up the efficiency of your computer, then read on. If you are satisfied with your computer's lighter load now, then you can stop. The following steps are only required every month or so, but doing the simple scan from earlier is recommended once a week.
Notice how at the top there are a few tabs? They kind of hide to keep the sleek design, but put your mouse over where it says "Modules" to the right of "1-Click Maintenance." Go ahead and click that button. By now, your computer will be giggling with glee as it knows you are about to tickle its speed sensors with joy!! On the left side of the window now is a tab called "Optimize & Improve." Ohhhh, what an understatement that is!! I told you, the people at Glarysoft are just too modest for their fantastic work!! Now click on the "Registry Defrag" option. "But Sterling, I defrag my computer often! I have no need to defrag my registry, so I'll pass." WRONG!!! When you defragment your computer, it does NOT touch the registry!! So you better click that button or I will for you!! Before you continue the process on the window that comes up, be sure to get a bookmanrk of this page because your computer will restart!!
After the process completes and you successfully analyzed, defragmented and restarted your computer, you should have noticed a speed increase so far. You are done!! If you feel tech savvy and brave, then feel free to visit the other, more advanced, options and play around with them. I highly recommend you check out the "Startup Manager" if you want to greatly decrease your computer's startup time!! And as always, PLEASE do not play with any options that you feel uncomfortable using!!! You will not break your computer, but you can do some squirrelly things that may take someone's expertise to fix!!
Now that you are done with your computer lovin' and scrubbin' you'll notice that your happy friend is now performing better, running faster, and most importantly, is not crashing!! After your amazing conversion, be sure to uninstall all those other garbage programs that the idiots at Worst Buy tell you to install or sell you at the Loser Bar. And as always, ENJOY finding your family throughout your adventures and worry less about your computer walking slower than a snail or crashing on you unexpectedly!!

Tip of the Day: Information Collaboration!!!
That's right folks, today we will learn how to SHARE!!! Let's spell that out together, ready? S-H-A-R-E, share!! Do YOU know how to share? If not, I will give you a few pointers and information on why it is so important!!!
Why people share:
Why people share:
- Sharing provides for a good way to get to know one another
- By giving something up of yours that means a lot to you, people are able to see just how much you love and trust them. In return, they will generally give back an equal or greater amount of their important things that may bless and benefit you!!
- Sharing is caring, duh!!!
- If you don't share, some people may talk bad about you and call you a "meanie stinker head" behind your back. That's not cool.
- The more you share, the better you feel!!
- The better you feel, the more you share!!!
- Endless loop of feeling great and spreading the love!!
So there are the top 7 reasons why you should share. If you don't share things, then people won't like you and you'll become a smelly hermit who lives under a rock of anti-sharing bullies, that simple.
"So Sterl, what does sharing have to do with my dead ancestors?"
I'm glad you asked!! If you share your family history research with others, they will be more apt to return to you the knowledge and research to see how the families tie together!! Sharing is a HUGE blessing and effective research tool when it comes to gathering information about a family you know about or want to know more about. If you share, that shows you care. If they share back, then they care too!! If you both care, then you will stay in contact with one another and share many, many more things as time unfolds!! SO SHARE!!!!
Some simple examples of how to share family history:
- Going to Ancestry.com and finding a public or private family tree someone has posted.
- Doing a google search for your person's name with quotes ("") around it (ex. "William Kopping") and seeing what people post about that individual. If you need to be more specific, add information outside of the quotes!! Try it with and without middle names, that helps too :) :)
- If you are LDS then you can find someone's contact infomation who has worked on an individual on New.FamilySearch.org. That is usually located in the Details tab on the far right, labeled "Contributors." Just click that and email/write/call away to your heart's every whim!! You'll be surprised on how much information some of the people you will meet may have.
- Just get the name out there!! Someone you may or may not know could randomly say "Oh hey, I remember that name!!" and BOOM!! you have a conversation about family history. I have met a few people who I am directly and indirectly related to because I pop a few names who I am researching here or there, and you would not believe the information I received from such a simple action!!! SUPER HELPFUL!!!
So that's it for today!! It's been a while since I posted and I totally forgot to talk about sharing your family history research and work with others until just now. Now I can sleep easy, knowing that I updated my blog and taught people to share finally. Remember, sharing is kindness insurance!!! The more you share, the less people will be apt to talk negatively about you :) :)

Tip of the Day: Searching under variants of someone's name and its effects
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OH MY GOSH!!!! I found some AWESOME information today on William Henry Kopping (William Bennett Kopping's father) and his records!!!! What I stumbled upon is his immigration record to the USA, I have been looking for this information FOREVER!!! Well, not really for-ev-er since I have only started my search about 6 months ago, but STILL!!! Those of you who are younger like me, you know how I feel :-p
So, back on topic after my excitement has been over joyously depicted in massive letters :) How did I find this beautiful declaration of intention? Well, here's the story (and what you will learn from it will be VERY helpful):
We were always told in training to "think outside the box." It's VERY important to do so, because you never know what you'll find (such as today)!! In search of William Henry Kopping, I noticed that his original marriage record was in 1903 (as noted in an earlier post I think) once with Gitta Nelson (who eventually died a few months later from pregnancy issues), and then later with Eva Grace Robarts (NOT Roberts!!) in 1906, with whom he had children with a few years following. Well, on the first marriage record to Gitta, William's name is listed as Wilhelm Kopping!! Note this: William and Wilhelm = same person.
Today I was just searching around, typing in William Kopping and similar ways to spell it on Ancestry.com and all the sudden I think to myself, "Hey Sterling, shouldn't you do a search for Wilhelm Kopping?" So I go ahead and do it!! I had NO idea that what I would soon find would throw me back on my seat, literally!!
Upon completion of the search, the first record to pop up was a naturalization record to the USA from 1911. For anyone who knows what a naturalization record contains, you can see why I'm excited; for everyone else, I'll be glad to explain!! A naturalization record to the USA (or anywhere else, I bet) may and most likely does contain the following information: the person's name, birth place, birth date, emmigration place and port, immigration place and port, parents and mother's maiden name, spouses and children (with locations and dates of births, marriages, etc.), physical description, and many, many other wonderful research aids for future searches!!!
So there you have it, today's lesson!! ALWAYS be sure to search for not just the person's direct name, but similar versions the way is spelled AND other forms of names that sound or look alike to it!!!!
So now you learned an invaluable lesson that could save you tons of time researching and looking for someone!! And don't forget, if you ever have any problems, be sure to stop by the Mesa Regional Family History Center!! We have a plethora of subscription websites you can access for free, plenty of search experts who could help you with virtually anywhere in the world, and an epic huge selection of books!! Oh yeah, AND IT'S ALL FREE!!!!

Day 3: When to do the "RE" search!!
Okay, some of you may know (because you are my family or friends who I have told) that I have learned a new purpose behind research. But first of all, I must get this off my back:
BLOGGING IS TOUGH TO KEEP UP WITH!!!! I'm going to just start blogging randomly when I have some time or whatever, no more distinct schedule as I kind of screwed that part up a few times already. So just check back weekly, I'll be sure to have something new here for you. But no more promises for daily, but I'll do my best :) :)
Whew!!! I feel better now :) Now to the logistics!!
On Friday before the FHC closed, something new caught my eye. I was just catching up on creating another PAF file for the Kopping family and re-gathering all my information (remember, I deleted ALL mine and the Kopping's family history records before) when I decided to check out Washington State's Digital Archives. Now, some of you have probably heard this before, so I'm going to say it again. BE SURE TO CHECK EACH STATE'S DIGITAL ARCHIVES, THEY PROBABLY HAVE ONE!!!!! Anyway, I was back on there collecting a bundle of digitized and super awesome records for the Koppings when I stumbled upon an interesting marriage record that wasn't there a few months back. So I decided to click, it wouldn't hurt to just see what free information is out there, ya know?
When I clicked the image, I was dancing with happiness as the following screen revealed something critical about the Kopping family that I did not know. Behold, William got marriade BEFORE I found his first marriage record!!! So why did this record not come up months earlier when I first did his family history research on that website? Because, just as the FHC's website (FHC = Mesa Regional Family History Center for short) has an evergrowing database of digitized and searchable books to read, so are other websites with their archives and digitized records!! So between a few months ago and now, I have finally unlocked the answer to the mysterious question that has bogged me down for a few months: Why did William take out his papers in the USA twice? I knew of his "first" marriage (it even says first on the document) which is when he took out his papers the second time, but what happened for the first? I found it!! Alas, William Kopping had TWO wifes and nobody knew about it!!!
Of course, I was resolute to find out more about his real first wife. Upon a little more research and tampering with a different surname spelling (very helpful!! NEVER BE FIRM ON ONE NAME SPELLING!!!), I quickly found Gitta Nelson's death record. She passed away a few months after their marriage from pregnancy!!! So therefor, the marriage was most likely annuled because it's been less than a year from the marriage and he remarried a few years later in 1906 to Eva Robarts.
TA DA!!!!! Now back to my lesson for today: It is critical that you check up on unknown information every once in a while when you tangent to other names and families to search as you never know when you'll find something important that wasn't there before!! In my case, I found William Henry's REAL first wife, Gitta. I then searched for her on New FamilySearch and saw that she is nowhere on there!! I rushed to register her and now her sacred ordinances are ready to be done!! AWESOME!!!! I'm sure that Gitta had a part in this as I found her exactly 104 years after her death date. She must have asked Heavenly Father to have someone do her temple work for her on earth, but that would require a sacrifice on my part (in this case, accidentally deleting all my family history research before I would go back and find her). That is my new explanation of why my family history was all deleted and I consider it to be a worthy cause for such a wonderful result.
Don't give up!! When you are searching and hit a brick wall, it's a good idea to take some time off for a breather. But PLEASE, go back and try again later!!! You never know what could have been added between then and now :) :) :)
BLOGGING IS TOUGH TO KEEP UP WITH!!!! I'm going to just start blogging randomly when I have some time or whatever, no more distinct schedule as I kind of screwed that part up a few times already.
